As part of Buffalo Trace’s Experimental Collection, this innovation in whiskey aging introduces an unprecedented barrel size that transforms the maturation process, imparting unparalleled flavors and complexities to the spirit. By exploring the impact of barrel size on the final product, bourbon was aged in larger barrels – 250L and 500L – alongside the standard 200L, all on the same aging floor and for identical durations.
Interestingly, while the 250L barrels exhibited familiar flavor notes akin to standard barrels, the 500L barrels revealed a distinctive character with rich tannins, depth, and a dry finish. This groundbreaking experiment highlights Buffalo Trace’s commitment to challenging conventional norms in whiskey craftsmanship, offering enthusiasts an exceptional tasting experience that pushes beyond traditional boundaries.
